During the US election campaign, fake news stories were far more shared and commented than actual articles from recognised newspapers. Many criticise the social media for not combating misinformation enough or at least not fast enough.

When advocating for the digital defence of voters, ex-US President Jimmy Carter himself recommends the use of fact-checking apps.

But which medium or body could hold the highest impartiality: Facebook (to safeguard its own reputation), a governmental body (with its own political priorities), or an independent oversight body (whose accountability can then appear blurred)?
